Counter keeps Charlotte's only Michelin star, The Story of Mi Cariño earns a Bib Gourmand and Albertine, L'Ostrica and Spaghett join the 2026 guide.

Charlotte now has 16 restaurants in the Michelin Guide, up from 12 a year ago. Counter keeps the city’s only Michelin star.

The guide published its 2026 American South selection Wednesday. Four Charlotte restaurants are new to it, and one of them also won a regional award for its chef.

Counter keeps its star

Counter, at 2001 W. Morehead St., is the only Charlotte restaurant on Michelin’s list of every starred restaurant in the American South for 2026. The region has 22 starred restaurants. Three won a star for the first time this year, in Georgia and Louisiana.

Counter’s page describes a multicourse tasting menu from Chef Sam Hart, with “shifting concepts” built on themes of nostalgia, music and personal history. The page also notes herbs and vegetables from nearby urban farms.

The other starred restaurants in the Carolinas are all in South Carolina: three in Charleston and Scoundrel in Greenville.

A Bib Gourmand and a young chef award for Mi Cariño

The Story of “Mi Cariño” in South End is one of 14 new Bib Gourmands across the region, Michelin said in its Bib Gourmand list. The Bib Gourmand marks good food at a moderate price. The region has 59 of them.

Its executive chef, Héctor González-Mora, won the guide’s American South Young Chef Award, presented with OpenTable. He calls his cooking “Left Coast Latino,” drawing on California, where he grew up, and Baja.

“At its essence, cooking is about feeding people, not feeding the ego,” González-Mora said in the guide’s profile.

The guide’s review of the restaurant singles out the taco royale, with seared ribeye in a sourdough tortilla, and a cocktail list built on tequila and mezcal.

Lang Van, the Vietnamese restaurant in the Plaza Shamrock neighborhood, keeps the Bib Gourmand it won in the first edition. The guide’s page on Lang Van credits co-owner Dan Nguyen, who started there as a team member before she and her husband, Chef Tuyen Tran, bought it.

The three other newcomers

  • Albertine, 525 S. Tryon St. Chef Joe and Katy Kindred named it for Queen Charlotte’s mother. The guide’s review describes Mediterranean and Southern cooking, from lamb kefta to a knafeh cheesecake.
  • L’Ostrica, 4701 Park Road in Montford. Chef Eric Ferguson and partner Cat Carter serve Mediterranean-inspired food with Asian accents, the review says. There is a tasting menu on Fridays and Saturdays and a themed Sunday supper.
  • Spaghett, 224 W. 10th St. It occupies the 19th-century Young-Morrison House and serves an Italian-inspired prix fixe menu, according to its review.

Across North Carolina

North Carolina has 11 Bib Gourmands in the 2026 guide, four of them new. Charlotte has two, the same as Raleigh and one fewer than Asheville. The others are in Carrboro, Durham and Knightdale. Counter is the state’s only starred restaurant.

What it means for you
