Ten applications seek 686 new hospital beds in Mecklenburg County. The state says 389 are needed. Public comment runs to Dec. 1; a decision is due by March.

Three health care groups have asked the state for 686 new hospital beds in Mecklenburg County. The state says the county needs 389.

The 10 applications are listed in the state’s certificate of need application log for Nov. 1 reviews, published by the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation. All 10 are marked competitive. That means the state will weigh them against each other and can approve only enough beds to meet the county’s need.

The figure of 389 acute care beds comes from the state’s 2026 need determinations. Applications were due Oct. 15, and the review began Sunday, Nov. 1.

Atrium Health Pineville, added beds 36 $56,383,812
Atrium Health Steele Creek, change of scope for a hospital already approved 26 $47,378,055

The costs are the applicants’ own estimates of capital spending, as the state log records them. Together they come to about $2.35 billion.

Not every hospital on the list is in Charlotte. Atrium Health Pineville is in Pineville, about nine miles south, and Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center is in Huntersville, in north Mecklenburg County.

By applicant, the bed requests are:

  • Atrium Health: 270 beds across five hospitals
  • Novant Health: 216 beds across three hospitals, one of them new
  • Duke CaroMont: 200 beds in two new hospitals

Even the smallest of the three bids, Duke CaroMont’s, would take more than half of the 389 beds on its own.

Where the new hospitals would go

Duke Health and CaroMont Health announced their two hospitals on Oct. 14. A company owned equally by the two systems would run both. The 120-bed hospital would be in the University City area and the 80-bed one in the River District in west Charlotte. The systems expect a state decision by the end of March 2027.

Novant’s only new hospital in the batch is the 36-bed Mountain Island Medical Center. The log says it would also have one dedicated operating room for cesarean sections.

The Atrium applications add beds to hospitals that already exist or, at Steele Creek, to one already approved. Atrium Health Pineville has also applied for one more heart-lung bypass machine, the one machine the state says Mecklenburg County needs this year.

What it means for you

  • Nothing is approved yet. The state reviews the applications side by side and can approve no more than 389 beds in total.
  • You can comment. Written comments on the Mecklenburg bed applications are accepted until Tuesday, Dec. 1, the state log says. A public hearing is required for each of the 10. The state’s certificate of need section posts hearing notices and, later, its decisions.
  • New beds take years. Duke and CaroMont say their hospitals could open in 2031 if approved and built on schedule.
