Charlotte groups that already run teen programs can apply for one of two $50,000 city grants to stay open later or reach more teens. Applications close Nov. 2.

Charlotte organizations that already run programs for teenagers can apply for a new city grant worth up to $50,000. The money is meant to help them stay open later, add days or reach more young people. Applications close at 11:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.

The OYO Partnerships Grant comes from the city’s Office of Youth Opportunities. The city announced it in an Oct. 5 city release.

Competition will be tight. The grant’s own page says two organizations will receive up to $50,000 each.

Who can apply

The city is not funding new programs built from scratch. To qualify, an organization must:

  • serve teens ages 13 to 18 within the city of Charlotte
  • already run a youth program, service or space, or show it can deliver the proposal
  • have the staff, administration and finances to manage city money
  • finish the work by July 31, 2027

The city lists nonprofits, community groups, faith-based groups with youth programs, recreation providers, mentoring groups, arts organizations and career-readiness programs among eligible applicants. No matching money is required, but applicants must say what resources they already put in.

What the money can pay for

The city gave examples of what it wants to fund:

  • opening a space to teens on Friday or Saturday evenings
  • adding programs on teacher workdays and other days off school
  • extending a program to more teens or more hours
  • bringing in an instructor for a new activity
  • staff, transportation, meals, equipment, space and supplies tied to the expansion

The grant cannot replace money an organization already spends. It also cannot cover general operating costs, programs that would run anyway or, unless approved, building improvements.

What it means for you

  • If you run a teen program in Charlotte, read the city’s application checklist first, then apply through the city’s grant portal before 11:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
  • Questions go to Bonnie Quizhpi at the Office of Youth Opportunities, bonnie.quizhpi@charlottenc.gov.
  • If you are a parent, funded programs can start once the city signs an agreement with each winner, and must finish by July 31, 2027.
